Why go
This house makes Strasbourg’s secular architecture as memorable as its cathedral. Its stone ground floor supports projecting timbered storeys covered with carving, a close-up contrast with the cathedral’s pink sandstone. It is an easy, specific stop while you are already on Place de la Cathédrale.
What to look for
- Carved timber panels cover the upper storeys.
- The stone base and overhanging floors show two building traditions together.
- Across the square, its dark façade contrasts with the cathedral sandstone.
The full story
Maison Kammerzell began as a late medieval town house and was altered in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its present appearance joins a stone ground floor with richly carved timbered upper levels, so it carries both older Gothic habits and the taste of the Renaissance. That layering is what makes the building useful to look at, rather than just photogenic. Stand back to see the whole outline and its projecting storeys, then move closer to read the pattern of wood and windows. The house also offers a small lesson in Strasbourg’s urban life: a prominent private building could claim attention beside a monumental church through craft and ornament instead of scale. Interior frescoes were later added by Alsatian painter Léo Schnug, but the reliable public encounter is with the exterior. The comparison across the square gives the stop its force: two very different uses of local building skill face one another.
