Why go
Stand back to see the Tower in its proper role behind the Cathedral, then look closely at the stacked white arcades and the visible lean. The tilt began during construction on unstable ground, and later stabilization kept the tower standing. A climb adds a different perspective on the entire Piazza del Duomo.
What to look for
- The Tower is the Cathedral's detached bell tower, behind the church.
- Its tiers of arcades make the tilt visible against the Cathedral and surrounding buildings.
- The lean developed while the medieval tower was still under construction.
The full story
The Leaning Tower was designed as the detached bell tower of Pisa Cathedral. Work began in the twelfth century, and the tower started to sink while it was still rising because the foundation rested on unstable ground. Construction continued in phases across many generations. The resulting tilt became its defining feature, but it is easier to understand the building if you first look at its role in the cathedral complex. Open marble galleries echo the surrounding architecture. Later engineering work stabilized the structure and reduced the lean, preserving both the tower and the visible story of its construction. The climb is a separate decision from appreciating the architecture: the operator describes a short visit up 251 uneven steps. From below, walk far enough back to compare the tower with the upright lines of the Cathedral.
