Santa Maria della Salute

Santa Maria della Salute combines a prominent waterfront silhouette with the history of Venice's response to plague. Its domes mark the Dorsoduro entrance to the Grand Canal, beside Punta della Dogana.

Santa Maria della Salute

Why go

The basilica gives a civic vow a monumental architectural form. Baldassare Longhena's Baroque design places an octagonal church and two domes at a highly visible water entrance. Inside, references to deliverance from plague add meaning to the decoration, while the sacristy's Titian and Tintoretto works offer a further art focus.

What to look for

  • Two domes rise above the octagonal main building.
  • A statue of the Virgin crowns the pediment.
  • The high altar depicts the Virgin expelling the Plague.

The full story

The Republic vowed to build the Salute during the devastating plague outbreak of 1630. Dedicated to the Virgin as a protector of Venice, the church made gratitude and hoped-for deliverance visible in the city's skyline. Construction began the following year under Baldassare Longhena. The high altar turns that purpose into a theatrical scene. Josse de Corte's sculpture depicts the Queen of Heaven expelling the Plague, while the altar shelters a Byzantine Madonna and Child brought from Candia after its fall to the Ottomans. Civic memory and Venice's Mediterranean connections therefore meet within the same devotional setting. The vow also included an annual visit by the Senate. The November feast of the Madonna della Salute grew from that commitment, with the historical procession crossing the Grand Canal on a temporary pontoon bridge. The church's relationship to the water is consequently more than scenic: the canal formed part of a ritual joining Venice's governmental centre to its monument of thanksgiving.

Useful to know

  • Look at the waterfront silhouette before studying the church at close range.
  • Include Punta della Dogana for a view connecting the basilica with the wider basin.
