Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni

This Castello confraternity preserves Carpaccio's narratives of saints associated with Venice's Dalmatian community. Its compact artistic setting connects detailed storytelling with the city's maritime relationships across the Adriatic.

Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni

Why go

Carpaccio's panels reward reading individual gestures, animals and interior details within stories made for a particular community. The Dalmatian confraternity's saints give the cycle a shared identity, while the paintings remain in the building that commissioned them. It offers a focused alternative to the larger biblical programme at San Rocco.

What to look for

  • A relief above the entrance shows Saint George killing the dragon.
  • Carpaccio’s Saint Jerome and the Lion forms part of the ground-hall cycle.
  • Saint Augustine in His Study shifts the narrative to a detailed scholarly interior.

The full story

Venice's strong commercial and political relationship with Dalmatia brought sailors and workers from the eastern Adriatic into the city. Known in Venice as Schiavoni, they formed a brotherhood approved in 1451. Saints George, Jerome and Tryphon supplied a devotional identity rooted in their community. The confraternity acquired and adapted a former hospital as its headquarters. Carpaccio received the commission for its saint narratives in the early sixteenth century, and the works remain in the building. Their subjects draw on legendary lives of saints, with dragons, a lion and detailed human settings turning devotion into highly observable stories. The cycle's appeal includes the change between dramatic action and quiet interiors. Saint George's conflict contrasts with Jerome's encounter with the lion and Augustine's scholarly room. The paintings therefore carry both shared religious meaning and a rich variety of narrative detail. Their setting keeps the Dalmatian community behind the commission visible alongside the artist's achievement.

Useful to know

  • Follow one saint’s sequence before comparing it with the other narratives.
  • Include this as a focused Castello art stop rather than combining it with every large scuola.
