From the Zurich World / Itineraries

Old Town Icons and the Lake

Begin at the National Museum, cross to Lindenhof and the central churches, then choose Kunsthaus or the zoo before ending beside Lake Zurich.

Old Town Icons and the Lake

Why go

This route gives a first visitor the clearest Zurich sequence: national history at the station, elevated Old Town orientation, church architecture on both riverbanks and open water at the lake. Kunsthaus and the zoo are alternatives, not quick equals. Keep one major attraction optional so the center remains enjoyable, and use the Limmat crossings to connect the landmarks rather than rushing between them. This leaves room to pause at the lakefront.

Useful to know

  • Make Kunsthaus or the zoo optional; each deserves more time than a checklist stop.
  • Check church and museum access before setting out, then keep the river sequence flexible.
