Why go
The Explanada is both a landmark and a connector. Its red, cream and black pavement creates a strong wave pattern beneath four rows of palms, while Casa Carbonell, La Concha auditorium and waterfront sculptures provide reasons to slow down. Use it to move naturally between central streets, the port and Postiguet Beach.
What to look for
- The pavement's wave pattern is assembled from about 6.6 million tricolour marble tiles.
- Four palm rows create a shaded axis between the city frontage and marina.
- Casa Carbonell and the shell-shaped La Concha auditorium punctuate the route.
Useful to know
- Walk it as the link between the old town, port and Postiguet rather than making a separate return trip.
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes if stopping to study the pavement, buildings and sculptures.
- The palms soften the sun, but the waterfront remains hot and bright around midday.
