Why go
The fountain was built for the 1929 International Exposition and gives the long approach from Plaça d’Espanya a dramatic centre. It is most interesting as part of that designed sequence, with the palace rising behind it. A performance depends on a separately announced programme.
What to look for
- The fountain occupies the centre of the axis leading toward Palau Nacional.
- The palace façade rises behind the fountain when viewed from below.
The full story
The Magic Fountain was one of the features created for the 1929 International Exposition on Montjuïc. Designer Carles Buïgas used water and illumination to animate the formal route between Plaça d’Espanya and Palau Nacional. That relationship is still visible when the fountain is inactive: its basin sits on the central line, with stairs and the museum building beyond. The nearby Four Columns tell another part of the site’s history. They were removed under the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera and later re-erected close to their earlier position. Music was added to fountain performances decades after the original construction. The place therefore combines exhibition spectacle with a changing public landscape. A visit to the structure and a visit for a show are different plans; the latter depends on an announced programme.
Useful to know
- Check the city’s current fountain programme before planning an evening around a show.
- Combine an exterior look with the walk from Plaça d’Espanya to Palau Nacional even when no performance is confirmed.
