Why go
Bears have appeared in Bern’s records since the 15th century, and this historic enclosure opened in the 19th. The pit remains a visible reminder of an older approach to displaying animals; the adjoining riverside park gives the tradition a different setting. The two spaces make a useful stop at the eastern edge of the Old City.
What to look for
- The historic bear pit stands beside the current BearPark.
- The BearPark descends toward the Aare below the Old City.
- Nydeggbrücke links the area to the eastern Old City.
Useful to know
- Look at the historic pit and the riverside park together to understand the contrast.
- Combine the stop with Nydeggbrücke and, if time allows, Untertorbrücke.
