Why go
Vignola's sixteenth-century design joined several buildings behind one composed face. From the square, notice the repeated arcade and the two taller openings that break its rhythm. Passing through those arches changes the scene from Bologna's formal main square to the narrower market lanes beyond.
What to look for
- Two tall arches cut through the façade toward the Quadrilatero.
- Corinthian pilasters give separate buildings a single visual rhythm.
- The Pavaglione portico continues toward the Archiginnasio.
Useful to know
- Look at the whole façade from Piazza Maggiore before taking an arch into the market lanes.
- Continue under the Pavaglione portico toward the Archiginnasio.
- Plan for an exterior and public-portico visit; the palace is private.
