Sculpture in the San Domenico chapel
Inside the Chapel of San Domenico, the saint’s tomb gathers sculpture made over several centuries. It belongs within a visit to the basilica rather than a second itinerary stop.
Read the Arca as a work built in stages: the medieval sarcophagus carries scenes from Dominic’s life, then later artists expanded the monument above and around it. Niccolò dell’Arca and the young Michelangelo are among the names to look for as you move from the larger structure to its small figures.
What to look for
Narrative reliefs run across the medieval sarcophagus.
Niccolò dell’Arca’s marble crown rises above the earlier work.
Michelangelo’s small figures include an angel holding a candle.
Useful to know
Look for the tomb in the chapel during the basilica visit.
Check the basilica’s visitor arrangements before making a special trip for the Arca.
