Getting your bearings in the Great Hall
Great Hall ↗After security and admission, pause in the Great Hall with the Grand Staircase as your reference point.
Look up at the shallow domes and the large arches.
Three shallow domes span the Great Hall above broad stone arches and the people arriving beneath them. Keep the Grand Staircase in view while you get your bearings.
The hall opened in 1902. Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed it, and his son Richard Howland Hunt completed the work after his father’s death. Limestone walls, masonry piers and a continuous upper balcony shape the interior.
The museum grew through many additions, from large courts to smaller rooms. Today we’ll use the hall as our starting point and visit six works. The first is a temple with a gateway and rooms of its own.
Stay on Floor 1 and follow the Egyptian Art signs to Gallery 131 for the Temple of Dendur. Use the current open gallery entrances along the way.
