Martorana
The Martorana on Piazza Bellini layers brilliant Byzantine mosaics with later Baroque changes. It is especially rewarding beside the much plainer neighboring San Cataldo.
Why go
This church shows how Palermo's monuments accumulated new identities rather than freezing in one period. The 12th-century mosaics remain its main draw, while the later additions make the contrast visible within a single visit. Nearby San Cataldo makes the contrast between the two churches clearer.

Useful to know
Visit with San Cataldo if both are open; the two neighboring churches make their different interiors easier to read.
