San Cataldo
San Cataldo's three red domes stand beside the Martorana on Piazza Bellini. Inside, its unusually spare Norman space offers a sharp contrast to its richly decorated neighbor.
A short visit makes the Arab-Norman vocabulary easy to see: a compact rectangular body, blind arches and the line of domes above. Cross to the Martorana afterward and the difference between restrained stone space and mosaic-covered interior becomes the real payoff of the pair.
What to look for
Three red domes above the rectangular church
A spare interior with pointed arches
A side-by-side comparison with the Martorana
Useful to know
Circle the exterior before entering to see how the domes sit over the simple building below.
Pair it with the Martorana across Piazza Bellini; their contrasting decoration is the most useful way to understand both.
