Torre Solferino

Torre Solferino is the pale postwar tower on Piazza Solferino. Its height and horizontal balconies interrupt the older square, making it a quick architectural stop while crossing between Via Pietro Micca and Via Cernaia.

Torre Solferino

Why go

See the tower as a record of Turin’s rebuilding after wartime bombing. Its modern scale and facade stand out against the older porticoes and monuments. A short look from across the square tells the story more clearly than approaching the private entrance.

What to look for

  • The light-coloured tower rises above the older square frontages.
  • Horizontal windows and terraces give the facade its rhythm.
  • A portico connects its ground floor to the commercial streets nearby.

The full story

The site of Torre Solferino was reshaped after bombing destroyed the earlier building at the meeting of Via Pietro Micca and Via Santa Teresa. Gualtiero Casalegno designed the replacement, completed in 1952, as a residential and commercial tower facing the square. Its light finish, rows of windows and broad terraces make the tall building visually distinct from the nineteenth-century fronts around it. At street level, the portico carries on a familiar Turin pattern of sheltered commercial space. That contrast is the point of the stop: the tower neither hides its postwar date nor severs itself entirely from the city’s older pedestrian habits. Look at it together with Fontana Angelica and the square’s historic buildings to see several stages of Turin’s urban life in one view.

Useful to know

  • Stand across Piazza Solferino to compare the tower with its lower nineteenth-century neighbours.
  • Treat the building as an exterior architecture stop; visitor access inside is unverified.
