From the Amsterdam World / Itineraries

Canals, Flowers and the Amstel

Follow water through the Canal Ring, from the Bloemenmarkt on the Singel toward the Amstel, with canal façades and bridges setting the pace.

Canals, Flowers and the Amstel

Why go

This route works because its anchors are connected by Amsterdam’s water rather than by a single monument. Bloemenmarkt sits on the Singel between Koningsplein and Muntplein; the Canal Ring opens through Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht; and the Amstel brings a different riverfront scale. Add Magere Brug or Museum Van Loon only if an interior suits the pace. It works for visitors who want architecture and city planning to lead the day, with indoor stops kept selective.

Useful to know

  • Begin at Bloemenmarkt and walk along the canals; the route is better paced on foot than as a sequence of timed stops.
  • Treat museums along the way as optional, so the canals and bridges remain the main experience.
