Erottaja

Erottaja is the small central square where Esplanadi ends and Mannerheimintie begins, historically used as Helsinki’s geographic zero point for measuring distances to other Finnish cities.

Erottaja

Why go

Its value lies in reading the structure of central Helsinki rather than seeking a conventional attraction. The name means “the separator,” and the junction visibly divides the east–west line of Esplanadi from Mannerheimintie’s route northwest through the city. The western end of Esplanadi meets the beginning of Mannerheimintie here.

What to look for

  • The western end of Esplanadi meets the beginning of Mannerheimintie here.
  • Svenska Teatern occupies the square’s most prominent architectural position.
  • The zero-point role gives the modest junction an outsized place in Helsinki’s geography.

Useful to know

  • Erottaja is an open public junction best encountered while walking between Esplanadi and Mannerheimintie.
  • Include Erottaja in a walk between Esplanadi and Mannerheimintie rather than planning it as a separate visit.
