Fourvière
Lyon's western hill brings Roman theatres, Lugdunum museum, the Fourvière basilica and broad city views into one demanding but coherent area.
Why go
Fourvière holds two origins of Lyon in the same landscape: Roman Lugdunum on the slope and the nineteenth-century basilica above it. The panorama then ties those monuments back to the Saône, Presqu'île and Croix-Rousse. The climb is real, so use the hill as a half-day area rather than a quick detour.
What to look for
Roman theatre and odeon on the hillside
The basilica and its citywide silhouette
Panoramas across Lyon's rivers and districts
Useful to know
Use the funicular or start at the top if steep climbs are a concern.
Allow at least half a day for both the museum and hilltop landmarks.
