Vieux Lyon
Renaissance streets, courtyards and traboules stretch between Saint-Georges and Saint-Paul beneath Fourvière, with Lyon Cathedral anchoring the central historic quarter.
Why go
This is Lyon's most concentrated historic walk. Narrow lanes reveal merchants' houses and internal courtyards, while passages cut through deep blocks toward the Saône. The district rewards patient observation, though its busiest streets can feel crowded and many traboules remain residential spaces.
What to look for
Renaissance courtyards and spiral stair towers
Traboules linking parallel streets
Saint-Jean Cathedral and the Fourvière backdrop
Useful to know
Arrive earlier for quieter lanes and courtyards.
Respect signs, residents and opening restrictions inside traboules.
