Why go
This route suits travelers who want civic architecture and a hill neighborhood in one day. Keep Terreaux, the museum and the climb toward the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls as the core. Hôtel de Ville, the opera and Bartholdi Fountain are compact observations around the square. Add Saint-Nizier or Rue Édouard-Herriot only if you prefer architecture and shopping to a longer Croix-Rousse walk. The slope makes the second half more demanding, so trim optional stops before rushing the museum.
Useful to know
- Reserve the longest block for the Museum of Fine Arts.
- Drop optional shopping streets if you want more time on Croix-Rousse.
- Expect a sustained uphill finish after Place des Terreaux.
