Beyond Malta’s Main Cities: Temples, Cliffs and Island Landscapes

Build days around the southern temple landscape, Gozo’s older settlements and the exposed coasts rather than treating them as city add-ons.

Beyond Malta’s Main Cities: Temples, Cliffs and Island Landscapes

Why go

Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra reveal the islands’ prehistoric architecture in open countryside, while Gozo offers Ġgantija and a more rural setting. The shores around Għajn Tuffieħa bring in the limestone coast. Build a southern temple outing around the two neighbouring complexes, or keep Gozo’s archaeology with its island landscapes. These are useful thematic combinations rather than one continuous route. Select a region first, then leave room for the exposed approaches and the journey to a different island.

The full story

Malta’s strongest destinations outside the main cities are spread across an island landscape that changes quickly from built-up harbour to exposed rock and fields. On the south coast, Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra stand close enough to compare but deserve time for their different plans, stonework and setting. Their position near the sea makes wind and sun part of the visit. Gozo adds another useful contrast. Ġgantija continues the temple story in a less urban island setting, while villages, terraces and coastal views encourage a slower day. On Malta itself, Dingli’s cliffs and Għajn Tuffieħa’s bay show the steep, weather-shaped edge of the archipelago. Treat these as thematic combinations: temples with the southern coast, or Gozo’s archaeology with its countryside, rather than trying to collect them between city appointments.
