Malta’s Walled Cities and Harbour Towns

Use Valletta, Mdina and Rabat as contrasting bases for Malta’s military, civic and everyday urban history, each with a distinct setting.

Malta’s Walled Cities and Harbour Towns

Why go

Valletta gives you a planned capital above the Grand Harbour; Mdina compresses medieval lanes and bastions into an inland citadel; Rabat extends the old settlement beyond its walls. They work as complementary visits, with different street patterns and histories to notice. Pair Mdina with Rabat for an inland walk, or explore the harbour towns separately when sea views matter most. This is a free-order selection: choose the urban setting that suits your day and allow for transfers between towns.

The full story

Malta’s principal urban experiences divide naturally between harbour and interior. Valletta was built after the Great Siege as a fortified city above the Grand Harbour, where military planning and sea views are inseparable. Its regular streets make the city easier to navigate than its dense stone fabric first suggests. Mdina has a different mood and geography. Its walled, elevated core preserves narrow streets, palaces and bastions shaped by older medieval settlement. Rabat begins outside those walls and gives the wider setting: lived-in streets and separate Roman and catacomb sites. Visit Valletta for scale and harbour outlooks, then pair Mdina with Rabat when you want a slower inland walk. Cobbles, stairs and heat make these places better explored at a measured pace.
