La Madeleine

La Madeleine looks like a Roman temple at the end of Rue Royale, making a short architectural stop between Place de la Concorde and the Grands Boulevards.

La Madeleine

Why go

Visit La Madeleine to see how Paris turned a church into a monumental civic landmark. Fifty-two Corinthian columns wrap the building, and the temple-like exterior makes a striking counterpoint to the nearby classical square at Place de la Concorde. Inside, the single nave, domes, gilding and high-altar sculpture reveal a much more theatrical sacred space than the exterior suggests.

What to look for

  • Fifty-two Corinthian columns, each 20 metres high, run around the exterior.
  • The bronze doors carry reliefs of the Ten Commandments.
  • Inside, three domes span the single nave above wide arches.

The full story

La Madeleine took its present form only after several changes of plan. An earlier church project began in the 18th century but stalled, and the Revolution interrupted later work when only foundations and a portico had been completed. In 1806 Napoleon ordered a Temple to the Glory of the Great Army, and Pierre-Alexandre Vignon developed the design as an ancient temple inspired by the Maison Carrée at Nîmes. Its military purpose later receded, and the building became a church. That history explains the apparent contradiction visitors see today: a functioning church with no conventional church tower or cross-dominated silhouette, set at the end of Rue Royale as a monumental partner to Place de la Concorde. The exterior is therefore part of the historical argument, not merely decoration.

Useful to know

  • Approach along Rue Royale from Place de la Concorde to see why the church was placed at the end of that axis.
  • Look around the exterior first, then enter if visitor and worship access permits; the two experiences are deliberately different.
  • Pair La Madeleine with Place de la Concorde and Place Vendôme for a compact walk through classical Paris.
