Why go
Old Town is most useful as an area to connect named places. Celetná follows the old route from the gate to the square; the clock, Týn Church and Jan Hus Monument then give that space several stories. Smaller streets lead toward Charles Bridge and the Vltava, so a walk can link the city's commercial heart with its river crossing.
What to look for
- Celetná links Powder Gate with Old Town Square.
- The Astronomical Clock and Týn Church face the square from different sides.
- Lanes toward the Vltava lead onward to Charles Bridge.
The full story
Staré Město grew around a riverbank market and became Prague's merchant centre. Its medieval street pattern is still easier to feel on foot than on a map. The route from Powder Gate along Celetná to Old Town Square follows a line that also became part of royal processions toward the Castle. The old district's boundary lay along a moat and wall; later streets such as Na Příkopě trace that former edge. Within the area, the square gathers the town hall, churches and public monuments, while the streets westward draw visitors to the Vltava crossing. These anchors make Old Town more than a collection of façades. Walking from the former gate to the river shows how trade, civic life and ceremonial movement shared the same compact ground.
Useful to know
