Bocca della Verità and Santa Maria in Cosmedin
A marble mask made famous as a lie detector shares a visit with one of Rome’s most atmospheric medieval churches beside the ancient Forum Boarium.
Why go
The Bocca della Verità is quick to understand but more rewarding with the basilica around it. The mask may once have served as a drain or ritual fitting, while the church preserves a restrained columned interior, Cosmatesque pavement and layers tied to Rome’s Greek-speaking medieval community.
What to look for
Study the open eyes, nostrils and mouth of the heavy marble face, often identified with the sea god Oceanus.
Inside the basilica, look down at the geometric Cosmatesque floor and along the reused ancient columns.
Place both objects within the Forum Boarium, Rome’s ancient riverside market and temple district.
Useful to know
Allow 30–45 minutes, with extra time if a queue forms for the mask.
Visit the church quietly and avoid treating the portico queue as the entire stop.
The Temple of Hercules Victor and Circus Maximus make a coherent nearby continuation.
