Why go
The fountain rewards a closer look while you cross the Campo. Its reliefs connect a public water supply with sacred imagery, including the Madonna and scenes from Genesis. The sculpture visible in the square is a nineteenth-century replacement of Jacopo della Quercia's earlier work, a useful distinction when you look at its crisp marble surfaces.
What to look for
- Look for the Madonna and Child at the centre of the long marble frame.
- The side reliefs show scenes from Genesis.
- The sculpture in the square is a later replacement of Jacopo della Quercia's work.
Useful to know
- Spend a few minutes at the upper edge of Piazza del Campo rather than planning a separate journey.
- Continue across the square to see how the fountain relates to Palazzo Pubblico.
