Synagogue of El Tránsito and Sephardi Museum
A richly decorated fourteenth-century prayer hall now houses the Sephardi Museum, making this both an architectural visit and an introduction to Jewish life in Toledo.
Samuel ha-Levi’s synagogue has a scale and density of stucco ornament that set it apart from nearby Santa María la Blanca. The museum displays add the history of Sephardic communities to the room itself, including the rupture caused by the 1492 expulsion. Give both parts attention rather than treating the hall as a photo stop.
What to look for
Intricate stucco covers much of the prayer hall’s upper walls.
The women’s gallery looks into the former worship space through five openings.
Museum displays explain Sephardic culture beyond the building’s architecture.
Useful to know
Pair it with Santa María la Blanca to see how different the two surviving synagogue interiors are.
Check the museum’s official visit page for room availability on your date.
