Camposanto Monumentale

The long cloister on the north side of Pisa's cathedral square turns a burial ground into a place for medieval frescoes and sculpture. Give it time beyond the Tower stop.

Camposanto Monumentale

Why go

The Camposanto offers a quieter, more enclosed counterpart to the open lawn outside. Walk its arcades to find ancient sarcophagi, tombs and surviving frescoes, including the dramatic Triumph of Death cycle. It was founded to gather burials previously scattered around the Cathedral, making the square's final monument a record of Pisan memory.

What to look for

  • A long Gothic cloister wraps around a central lawn.
  • Sarcophagi and tombs line the arcades rather than filling the open court.
  • Medieval frescoes, including the Triumph of Death, make the walls part of the visit.

The full story

The Camposanto was the last of the square's great monuments to take shape. Founded in 1277 to consolidate graves around the Cathedral, it grew into a long cloister whose arcades frame a central burial ground. Its walls became an ambitious picture surface. The medieval fresco program included the Last Judgement, Hell and the Triumph of Death, usually associated with Buonamico Buffalmacco; later artists added biblical and Pisan subjects. These paintings make the cemetery more than a quiet architectural edge to the Piazza del Duomo. They show what generations of Pisans chose to remember and how they imagined death and salvation. Ancient sarcophagi under the arcades add another layer: Roman objects became part of a medieval Christian setting. Walk along the inner perimeter rather than judging the monument from its plain outer wall; the change from the broad square to the cloister is central to its effect.

Useful to know

  • Enter after seeing the Cathedral square so the cloister's enclosed plan makes sense.
  • Check the monument operator's current calendar before relying on interior access.
