San Nicola

San Nicola's octagonal bell tower offers a second, less familiar tower to study in Pisa. The Romanesque façade and artworks give the church more substance than a quick tower photograph.

San Nicola

Why go

The unusual octagonal tower, with small arcades and a pointed cap, makes San Nicola distinct from the famous round tower at the Cathedral. On the church, notice blind arches, lozenges and marble inlay. If the interior is open, look for the image of St Nicholas saving Pisa from plague among its paintings and sculpture.

What to look for

  • The bell tower has an octagonal plan and a pointed upper profile.
  • Blind arches and lozenges decorate the Romanesque church façade.
  • An image of St Nicholas saving Pisa from plague is held inside.

The full story

San Nicola is recorded with an adjoining convent from 1097, and later Augustinian work enlarged the church. Its façade uses familiar Pisan Romanesque devices: strips dividing the wall, blind arches, diamond forms and marble inlay. The octagonal bell tower makes the site especially distinctive. Its changing stone colours, small upper arcade and pyramidal cap create a very different outline from Pisa's round cathedral tower. The church interior accumulated art in later centuries, including an image of St Nicholas saving Pisa from plague. A covered passage once linked the church with nearby buildings so Medici women could reach worship privately, another reminder that the church belonged to a working urban network rather than an isolated monument. Look at the tower and façade first; entry to the artworks should be checked separately.

Useful to know

  • Compare the octagonal bell tower with the Cathedral's round Leaning Tower.
  • Check current visitor access before counting on the church interior.
