Ciutat Vella

Use Valencia’s old city as a walkable base for medieval gates, civic palaces, churches and the market quarter, with more worthwhile stops than fit into one short visit.

Ciutat Vella

Why go

Ciutat Vella brings Valencia’s main historic layers into a compact district rather than a single monument. Its six neighborhoods include the Cathedral and Plaza de la Virgen around La Seu, the Central Market and Silk Exchange in El Mercat, and the Serranos and Quart gates at opposite edges of the former walled city.

What to look for

  • La Seu groups the Cathedral, Plaza de la Virgen and Palau de la Generalitat within a few streets.
  • El Mercat places the Central Market, Silk Exchange and Santos Juanes Church around one square.
  • Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart mark different sides of the former medieval enclosure.

Useful to know

  • Split the district into the La Seu and El Mercat clusters if you have only half a day.
  • Use the two medieval gates as endpoints for a longer cross-town walk.
