Round Hall
The Round Hall is worth entering for its Pantheon-like vault and enormous porphyry basin. Roman mosaics and colossal statues turn it into one of the Pio Clementino’s most architectural rooms.
Why go
Michelangelo Simonetti shaped the hemispherical vault with the Pantheon in mind. Beneath it, the red porphyry basin, Roman floor mosaics and large statues work at different scales. The room lets you read ancient objects within an eighteenth-century display designed to feel monumental, rather than studying each sculpture in isolation.
What to look for
A huge red porphyry basin stands beneath the dome.
Roman mosaics form part of the floor display.
Useful to know
Look upward at the vault, then down at the mosaic floor before leaving.
