Greek Cross Hall
Two vast red porphyry sarcophagi set the Greek Cross Hall apart. Come for the funerary monuments linked to Helena and Constantina, then notice the ancient mosaic at the centre.
Why go
The hall’s cross-shaped plan places the sarcophagi within a deliberately grand setting. Their scale and costly stone speak differently from the freestanding mythological statues nearby. The mosaic underfoot adds another ancient medium, so this short stop shows how burial monuments and floor decoration were brought together in the papal collections.
What to look for
Red porphyry sarcophagi are associated with Helena and Constantina.
An ancient mosaic occupies the centre of the hall.
Useful to know
Make room to view both sarcophagi and the central floor mosaic.
