Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis
The Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis is an excavated Roman cemetery on Vatican Hill. A guided visit follows tombs beside an ancient road, away from the usual museum galleries.
Why go
The terraced graves preserve a landscape of Roman burial rather than a collection assembled inside a museum. Following the ancient road helps explain the arrangement of tombs down the hillside. This differs from the burial site beneath St. Peter’s Basilica: its tombs reveal a Roman road and cemetery spread across the hill.
What to look for
Roman tombs step down the Vatican Hill.
An ancient road gives the cemetery its Via Triumphalis name.
Useful to know
Book the guided visit for this site specifically; it is separate from St. Peter’s excavations.
