From the Venice World / Itineraries

Rialto, San Polo, and San Marco

Walk from Rialto’s trading quarter through Campo San Polo to Palazzo Grassi, Santo Stefano and La Fenice, combining neighborhood streets with contemporary art and Venice’s theatre history.

Rialto, San Polo, and San Marco

Why go

Begin at Rialto Bridge and explore Rialto before continuing to Campo San Polo. Cross the Grand Canal toward Palazzo Grassi for the route’s main exhibition visit, then continue through Santo Stefano to La Fenice. These six essential stops move from trading streets and a neighborhood square to art, church architecture and theatre. Palazzo Grassi and La Fenice account for much of the visit time, so confirm their current visitor arrangements before setting out. Allow a full day for the interiors, bridge crossings and lane-finding; avoid adding St Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace to this already substantial sequence.

Useful to know

  • Plan the Palazzo Grassi and La Fenice visits before setting out; they are substantial parts of this route.
  • Walk from Campo San Polo toward Palazzo Grassi, then Santo Stefano and La Fenice; allow for the canal crossing.
  • Keep additional major interiors for another day if you want time for all six essential stops.
