Basilica di San Domenico
This Dominican basilica combines Saint Dominic's tomb with notable painting and carved woodwork. It merits a focused church visit, especially for the Arca in its chapel.
Begin with the Chapel of Saint Dominic, where the Arca brings together work associated with Nicola Pisano, Niccolò dell'Arca and Michelangelo. Then look beyond the tomb: Fra Damiano's wooden choir and paintings by Guercino, Filippino Lippi and Ludovico Carracci show how the church accumulated art across centuries. The square and interior reward more attention than a quick photograph of the façade.
What to look for
The Arca is the sculptural centre of the Chapel of Saint Dominic.
Fra Damiano's carved wooden choir offers a different kind of craftsmanship.
Works by Guercino, Filippino Lippi and Ludovico Carracci extend the art beyond the tomb.
Useful to know
Give the Arca and basilica one combined visit; the tomb is inside the church.
Check the church's visitor information, since religious services can limit sightseeing.
