The full story

Parliament Hill rises above the Ottawa River with Centre, East and West Blocks forming its Gothic Revival ensemble. Construction changes interior access, but the grounds and exterior viewpoints remain central to the capital.

Use the river-facing bluff to understand why the parliamentary buildings dominate so many views from both Ottawa and Gatineau. The grounds gather distinct buildings into one composition, so a slow circuit reveals the differences between the historic blocks rather than turning the Hill into a single tower photograph.

  • The three Gothic Revival blocks rise above the Ottawa River bluff.

Use an official map of the accessible Hill grounds; construction can change the perimeter.

Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial

The memorial records officers who died in the line of duty and stands near Parliament Hill's northwest edge. A quiet stop here adds a civic layer distinct from the main parliamentary architecture.

The Canadian War Museum follows Canada's experience of conflict through objects, testimony, and the architecture of its LeBreton Flats home. Its rising form and riverfront setting make the building part of the interpretation.

CF Rideau Centre

CF Rideau Centre is a large downtown shopping complex linking Rideau Street with the canal area. It is most useful as an indoor connector or practical stop, not a heritage attraction.

Château Laurier

The Château Laurier's limestone walls and copper roof define the canal edge beside the former Union Station. Its grand public spaces belong to an operating hotel, so visitor access should remain respectful.
