Ateneum Art Museum
Ateneum Art Museum faces Helsinki Central railway station across Railway Square and houses the Finnish National Gallery’s principal collection of Finnish and international classical art.
Why go
The museum offers the strongest single introduction to Finland’s classical art, while Theodor Höijer’s 1887 building turns the exterior into a lesson in artistic hierarchy. Its facade combines caryatids, portrait busts and reliefs devoted to architecture, painting, sculpture and music.
What to look for
The collection provides a broad view of Finnish art alongside international works.
Bramante, Raphael and Phidias appear as busts above the entrance hall.
Four caryatids supporting the pediment personify architecture, painting, sculpture and music.
Useful to know
Check the museum’s current calendar for exhibitions and exceptional holiday access.
The entrance is on Railway Square, directly opposite the central station.
