Why go
The Trade Fair Palace is a strong choice for modern and contemporary art, while other gallery buildings offer different collections and settings. Thinking of the National Gallery as a network lets you match the visit to the art you actually want to see.
What to look for
- The Trade Fair Palace houses major modern and contemporary collections.
- Other gallery palaces place art in historic Prague interiors.
The full story
The National Gallery's roots go back to a late eighteenth-century society formed to develop public interest in art in Bohemia. Its collections grew into a national institution, but they were never gathered into one simple visitor site. Today the choice of building shapes the experience as much as the choice of artwork. At the Trade Fair Palace, modern and contemporary collections sit within a large Functionalist building of the twentieth century. Other venues use older palaces, giving a different setting and different exhibitions. This spread matters when planning a day: a map pin for the institution does not tell you where a particular painting or collection is displayed. Start with the art or building that interests you, then plan that individual visit.
