Palazzo Chiablese

This Royal Palace wing preserves the duke's apartment and also contains separate temporary exhibition rooms. It suits a focused visit to Savoy domestic interiors when an apartment tour is available.

Palazzo Chiablese

Why go

Palazzo Chiablese brings the royal quarter down to a more domestic scale. Original furnishings in the duke's apartment, including a bureau by Pietro Piffetti, offer a contrast with the Royal Palace's ceremonial rooms. The adjacent Sale Chiablese host temporary exhibitions, so decide which part you mean to visit.

What to look for

  • The duke's apartment retains original furnishings.
  • A bureau by Pietro Piffetti is among the apartment's notable pieces.
  • Sale Chiablese are separate rooms used for temporary exhibitions.

The full story

Palazzo Chiablese is part of the Royal Palace complex, but its rooms tell a different story from the state apartments. Members of the Savoy family lived here, and in the eighteenth century the residence took its name from the Duke of Chablais. The duke's apartment retains furnishings that make the private side of court life easier to picture. A bureau by Pietro Piffetti is a particularly concrete example of the craft invested in those interiors. This setting helps explain the royal quarter as more than one grand building: the palace, family residences and specialised court spaces stood close together. Today's visitor also has to distinguish between the historic apartment and the neighbouring Sale Chiablese. Those rooms serve temporary exhibitions and follow their own programme. The distinction is useful when choosing between a visit focused on preserved interiors and one focused on a current show.

Useful to know

  • Confirm the apartment's current guided-visit arrangement before planning around it.
  • Check the specific Sale Chiablese exhibition separately; its access differs from the apartment.
  • Pair the apartment with the Royal Palace to compare private and ceremonial court rooms.
