Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi
A Gothic basilica on Strada Maggiore, memorable for the portico that wraps its small forecourt and for the Cimabue Madonna inside. Its exterior is rewarding even on a short walk.
The arcaded forecourt is the first reason to stop: its portico continues across the façade and along the side, making an enclosed space unlike a simple church frontage. Inside, the Gothic nave offers a spare architectural contrast and the Madonna attributed to Cimabue gives the visit an artistic focus.
What to look for
A four-sided portico frames the church's small forecourt.
The portico forms a broad arcade across the façade.
A Madonna attributed to Cimabue is a key interior work.
Useful to know
Walk around the forecourt before entering to see how the arcade encloses it.
Check church visiting conditions if you want to see the interior artwork; services can affect access.
Combine it with the Davia Bargellini museum across Strada Maggiore.
