Arca di San Domenico
The sculpted tomb of Saint Dominic is the main artistic focus inside the Basilica di San Domenico. See it as part of the basilica visit, not as another destination.
The Arca rewards a close look because its parts belong to different periods and sculptors. Nicola Pisano's reliefs form the medieval core; Niccolò dell'Arca added the marble crown, and Michelangelo contributed small figures. The changes make the tomb a compact history of sculpture within one chapel.
What to look for
Nicola Pisano's reliefs tell episodes from Dominic's life on the sarcophagus.
A later marble crown rises above the medieval tomb.
Look for Michelangelo's candle-bearing angel among the small figures.
Useful to know
Find the Arca in the Chapel of San Domenico during a visit to the basilica.
Check church visiting arrangements if the chapel is your main reason to go.
