Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio
This former university headquarters makes Bologna's scholarly past visible in its courtyard and armorial loggias. The celebrated Anatomical Theatre is a separate interior visit, so decide how much of the building you want to see.
The palace brought Bologna's law, medicine and arts schools together in the sixteenth century. Walk the double loggia and look at the dense coats of arms left by students and scholars. Their heraldry makes the university's international reach tangible before you consider the separately visited Anatomical Theatre.
What to look for
A double tier of loggias frames the courtyard.
Coats of arms cover walls and vaults used by generations of students and scholars.
The Anatomical Theatre is a distinct interior within the palace.
Useful to know
See the courtyard and loggias first, then allow a separate visit for the Anatomical Theatre.
Use the official palace information to plan the theatre and Stabat Mater rooms.
Treat the library as a working reading service, not a sightseeing room.
