Alcazaba of the Alhambra
The Alcazaba is the Alhambra's military quarter, with towers and the remains of a garrison neighborhood. It gives the palace visit a clear defensive starting point.
The walls and open Plaza de Armas show that the Alhambra was a guarded settlement as well as a royal residence. From the fortress, the Darro valley, Albaicín and Granada's plain make the position of the complex legible. Treat this as one part of an Alhambra visit rather than a separate destination with assumed access.
What to look for
The Plaza de Armas marks the former garrison quarter inside the walls.
The Torre de la Vela rises above the fortress and Granada's plain.
The north wall looks toward the Darro valley and Albaicín.
Useful to know
Fit the fortress around the other areas included in your Alhambra ticket.
Expect exposed sections and changes of level; check the adapted route before climbing the towers.
