Magdalen Bridge
Magdalen Bridge crosses the River Cherwell where the High Street meets the eastern approach to Oxford. The stone arches give views along the water and back towards Magdalen's Great Tower.
The bridge ties together river, road and college in one short stop. From its viewing points, look along the Cherwell and back to the tower that marks the eastern end of the High. The present bridge was rebuilt in the 1770s after flood damage to its predecessor, so the crossing also records the city's changing needs.
What to look for
Views extend north and south along the Cherwell's divided channels.
Magdalen Great Tower rises above the western end of the bridge.
The stone bridge spans the river with a series of arches.
Useful to know
Use the bridge as the turning point for a High Street walk.
Pause at a safe viewing point for the Cherwell and tower rather than lingering in the traffic route.
