Magdalen Great Tower

Magdalen's Great Tower rises above the eastern High Street and Magdalen Bridge. Completed in 1509, it is a landmark to view from outside, with a special role in May Morning tradition.

Magdalen Great Tower

Why go

The tower gives the east end of central Oxford a clear visual anchor. Look up at its corner turrets and upper windows from the street or bridge, then relate it to the college buildings below. Magdalen's choir sings from the tower on May Morning; it is not presented as a public climb.

What to look for

  • The upper stage has large paired windows and pinnacled corners.
  • The tower rises over Magdalen Bridge at the eastern approach to the High.

Useful to know

  • View the tower from Magdalen Bridge or the High Street before a college visit.
  • Use Magdalen College's visitor information for access to the grounds below.
