Santa María la Blanca
This former synagogue is a compact stop for Toledo’s layered religious history, with a striking sequence of white horseshoe arcades across five aisles.
Why go
The repeated arches and octagonal piers make the interior feel unlike a conventional church, even though the building later became one. Its form is a tangible example of Jewish worship in medieval Castile using architectural language associated with Islamic craftsmen. The later dedication adds another layer to what you see.
What to look for
Five aisles are divided by horseshoe arches on octagonal piers.
White plasterwork and carved capitals reward a slow look along the arcades.
A niche at the center marks the former location of the Torah ark.
Useful to know
Visit it with the Synagogue of El Tránsito to compare two very different surviving synagogue interiors.
Allow a separate pause for the arcades; the effect comes from looking down the full length of the room.
