Riva degli Schiavoni

The Riva degli Schiavoni is a waterfront walk along the San Marco Basin, extending east from the Doge's Palace toward Castello with open views across the water.

Riva degli Schiavoni

Why go

The promenade gives San Marco a maritime edge. Its name recalls Slavic traders arriving from across the Adriatic, linking today's walk with the movement of cargo into Venice. The open basin contrasts with the narrow canals inland, and the route naturally carries a walk from the palace toward Castello.

What to look for

  • The San Marco Basin opens out beside the promenade.
  • The Doge's Palace anchors the western end of the waterfront walk.

Useful to know

  • Continue east from the Doge's Palace along the basin when extending a walk into Castello.
  • Use fair weather for this exposed waterfront stretch rather than making it the main rainy-day activity.
