Why go
The New Bisagra Gate was designed to announce the city as much as defend it. Its triumphal outer arch, imperial arms and rounded towers have a different scale from the older gates nearby. Walking through the intermediate courtyard reveals that this is a sequence of spaces, not just a facade.
What to look for
- An imperial double-headed eagle crowns the outer arch.
- Two semicircular towers flank the monumental entrance.
- A courtyard separates the gate’s outer and inner bodies.
Useful to know
- Approach from outside the walls to see the full outer facade before passing through.
- Continue to nearby Santiago del Arrabal for a smaller-scale Mudéjar contrast.
