Why go
Mauro Codussi’s design gives a clear architectural contrast to Venice’s Gothic canal palaces. Classical columns organize the façade, while paired openings and arches create a repeated rhythm across the upper floors. The Wagner connection adds musical history to the building, though the palace exterior and any specialist interior visit are different experiences.
What to look for
- Classically inspired columns divide each level of the canal frontage.
- Paired tall openings sit beneath arches on the upper floors.
- The inscription Non Nobis Domine appears beneath a ground-floor window.
The full story
Construction began in 1481 to a design by Mauro Codussi and was completed after his death in 1509. Commissioned for Andrea Loredan, the palace placed Renaissance order on the Grand Canal at a time when many neighboring houses still expressed Gothic architectural traditions. Its sequence of owners explains the several family names associated with the building. The Calergi family enlarged it with a garden-facing wing, and inheritance through marriage later brought it to the Vendramins. These transfers linked a conspicuous Venetian residence to families and owners with connections beyond the city. Richard Wagner died here, giving the palace a lasting place in musical memory. Later museum activity developed around that association, while other institutional uses changed the house’s role. The inscription Non Nobis Domine, meaning Not unto us, O Lord, supplies another identity within the stone façade. Together, design, family names and musical history give the exterior more to communicate than its formal balance alone.
Useful to know
- Look at the canal façade as part of exploring Cannaregio’s Grand Canal buildings.
- Confirm arrangements for any Wagner-related interior visit separately from viewing the exterior.
