Carfax
Carfax is Oxford's central crossroads, where High Street, Queen Street, Cornmarket and St Aldate's meet. Pause here to orient a walk through the historic centre.
The junction makes Oxford's street plan legible at once. High Street leads east into the university quarter, Queen Street runs west towards Bonn Square, Cornmarket heads north, and St Aldate's leads south towards Christ Church. The surviving tower of St Martin's Church marks the corner and recalls the older city centre.
What to look for
Four central streets meet at the crossroads.
Carfax Tower is the surviving part of St Martin's Church.
Useful to know
Use Carfax to choose between a High Street walk and the St Aldate's route to Christ Church.
Treat a tower ascent, if available, as a separate visit from the public crossroads.
