Palazzo Franchetti

At the foot of the Accademia Bridge, Palazzo Franchetti presents richly framed Gothic windows on the Grand Canal. Its appearance reflects nineteenth-century remaking as well as the palace's earlier origins.

Palazzo Franchetti

Why go

The palace is especially useful for seeing how Venetian Gothic became a style later owners deliberately revived. Its elaborate exterior belongs partly to nineteenth-century projects of prestige and restoration, rather than an untouched medieval building. The Accademia Bridge setting makes that façade a natural architectural observation during a crossing of the canal.

What to look for

  • Rich window framing defines the canal-facing Gothic composition.
  • The palace stands at the foot of the Accademia Bridge.

The full story

The palace was erected in the sixteenth century, then substantially reworked in the nineteenth. Its Venetian Gothic appearance is also a history of revival: successive owners reshaped an older building to express their own status and ideas about Venice. After 1840, Archduke Frederick Ferdinand of Austria brought divided parts of the property together and began improvements intended to establish a more prominent Habsburg presence on the Grand Canal. A later owner, the comte de Chambord, commissioned further restoration from Giambattista Meduna. The palace became a setting where European dynastic identity could be expressed through Venetian architecture. Baron Raimondo Franchetti purchased it in 1878 and commissioned additional work, including Camillo Boito's grand staircase. That sequence explains why the exterior's rich Gothic framing and the interior's modernization belong to the same story. Looking from the Accademia Bridge, the building recalls how Venice's architectural language was repeatedly renewed for new owners and functions.
